Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Breadman TR2200C Ultimate Bread MachineCustomer Review: "Breadman" schmedman. Summary: 1 Stars
"Breadman" my foot. More like "Dudman," if you ask me.
My daughter bought me this as a Christmas present, since she knew how much I'd liked my previous breadmaker. Unfortunately, I had to return it today, because it was a piece of junk.
The machine takes up a lot of space, but I really wanted that fresh bread, so I cleared a place for it. As soon as I tried to make the first loaf of bread though, I knew I was going to have trouble. It started beating the living daylights out of the dough so loud, I figured I'd never be able to run it while trying to watch tv, and I was afraid it was going to vibrate itself right off the counter. It sounded like a washing machine! After a little while, it got a lot quieter. At first, I was relieved, but then I figured I ought to check on it.
Good thing I did, because the pan had vibrated loose from the housing, and the dough wasn't being kneaded anymore. I pushed the pan back down, more firmly this time, and it resumed kneading, only to pop loose again after another minute or so. All in all, I guess I had to open the machine to push the pan back down about four times. I was surprised I got a loaf of edible bread after all that disturbance, but I did. I had used the white bread, rapid bake cycle, so I blamed that for the bread's dense texture.
Next time I tried to use the breadmaker, I fiddled with the clips at the sides of the housing. I thought if I pulled them out a little further, maybe they'd hold the pan in better. No such luck. The pan started popping out as soon as the knead cycle started. I finally contrived to tie the pan down using a couple of twist ties and thought I'd solved the problem but, when the bake cycle started, I saw the dough was still in a ball in the bottom of the pan. Not sure what happened there, but I'd had enough. Back to the store it went. Whatever that machine's problems are, it can work them out on its own.
I'd say keeping the pan positioned in the machine is a pretty basic checklist item when building a breadmaker, so I'm not willing to give this company another try. I'm trading "down" to a Sunbeam.
Description of Breadman TR2200C Ultimate Bread MachineThink about how lovely it would be to wake up to the aroma of baking bread, and how equally satisfying it would be to present a warm, soft loaf of yeast or quick bread at the table for any meal. This programmable machine makes it so easy, there's no excuse for not making your own breads. You can put all the ingredients into the machine the night before, or the morning of, and program it to have the bread ready and waiting at the appropriate time. What used to be a time-consuming, messy process is now a snap. Measure the ingredients into the Breadman Plus, push a few buttons, then go for a walk in the park. Return a few hours later--or after a good night's sleep--to the unforgettable aroma and taste of homemade bread. This machine will even make the jam to top it off.The Breadman Ultimate makes and bakes most kinds of yeast bread--white, whole wheat, rye, honey banana, or crusty French--as well as quick or batter breads. Try the recipes in the booklet or your own favorites--just be sure the dry ingredients total less than about 5 cups so the dough doesn't overflow the 9-1/2-inch (nonstick) baking pan. If your recipe calls for adding ingredients late in the kneading cycle, there's a tray to hold and automatically dispense them. If you want to make bread that doesn't conform to the loaf shape, the machine can mix and raise the dough prior to shaping for baking in a conventional oven. For the beginner the process couldn't be easier, and even if you're an old hand at making bread from scratch, you'll find yourself baking much more frequently. And this machine quickly pays for itself: think of how many $3 or $4 loaves you won't be buying over the bread maker's lifetime! One drawback is worth noting: If you're a fan of the Breadman Plus, you may be less satisfied with the mixing results of the Ultimate's single bread hook versus the Plus's dual dough hooks. --Toni Reineke
